What do your genetic test results mean for your family? (KinTalk)

If you have Lynch syndrome, your genetic test results are an important piece of information to share with family members. Sharing your genetic test results helps family members know they need to be tested too and can help their care team know what testing to order.

We know reaching out to family members can be hard, especially when it comes to a sensitive topic like cancer risk. But studies have shown sharing test results makes it more likely that family members will talk to their care team about genetic testing and their risk for cancer. Even if your family members receive a negative (normal) genetic test result, that's still important information that can help them receive the right care.

If you aren't close to your family or haven't connect in years, there are still ways to share this information such as sending a letter or email, calling, sharing on social media, working with other relatives, or using this site to provide more information on Lynch syndrome. Your doctor or genetic counselor may also be able to provide a letter or more tips to help share this information with family members.

KinTalk is about sharing the information you have to help your family members make the choice that's right for them regarding genetic testing and their cancer risk.  It's time to start talking about this and change the conversation about cancer. Telling your family makes a difference! Knowing about Lynch syndrome can help prevent cancer in future generations and could even save a life.
